The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 1993 The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 1993 state: Every new electrical installation and every major alteration or extension to an existing installation shall, after completion, be inspected and tested by a competent person in an approved manner, and a certificate of test shall be completed verifying that the relevant requirements of these Regulations have been complied with.
Irish WEEE Directive Legislation Millions of fluorescent lighting tubes are sent to landfill sites each year. Under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive, this will change. The WEEE Directive forces commercial building operators to change their method of lamp disposal and switch to recycling. The Irish government implemented the WEEE Directive 2002/96/EC in August 2005.
Fire Detection and Alarm Systems An appropriate standard in respect of an electrical fire alarm system is that set down in IS3218 (1989) Section 5, which discusses user Responsibilities of B.S. 5839. Part 1: 1988 entitled "Fire Detection and Alarm Systems in Buildings" Part 1 describes the code of practice for installation and servicing and the details of inspections, maintenance and testing.
Emergency Lighting Emergency lighting is provided as a safety system in most modern buildings. As with other safety systems (such as fire alarms or sprinklers) it requires a high level of maintenance and testing to ensure correct operation when required. The design, installation and maintenance of emergency lighting, like other safety systems, is regulated by statute, standards and regulations. National Rules for Electrical Installations This summary of the Rules, based on the Third Edition, lays down the requirements for the design and erection of electrical installations so as to ensure safety and proper functioning for the use intended.
